SWROC High Tunnel Summary
The University of Minnesota recognizes the need for scientific research to support the growth of organic agriculture. The University’s Research and Outreach Centers (ROCs), located throughout the state, are well positioned to conduct organic research projects. By replicating research trials at various ROCs, organic practices, varieties, and approved inputs can be tested to determine which work best in different regions. The ROCs also have good connections with farmers in the regions where they are located. These connections are used to conduct on-farm research, thereby expanding replications and strengthening whole system research methodologies.
The general categories of organic research being conducted at the ROCs include: long-term fertility management; profitability; nutrient leaching; soil building cover crops; management stategies for various weed species; variety trials; dates and rates of seeding; alternative crops; cover crop management; interseeding companion crops; and efficacy of approved weed control inputs.
