ST. PAUL, MN May 20, 2009- State Conservationist William Hunt, of the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced today that the sign-up for the Organic Initiative through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) has been extended until June 30, 2009.

“This Organic Initiative is an important outreach effort for NRCS and I wanted to provide sufficient time for producers to come into their local NRCS offices to learn about the program, propose solutions to treat their environmental problems and sign-up,” said William Hunt, State Conservationist. “Producers should come in as soon as possible and not wait until the last minute in case they need to provide information to USDA to show that they are eligible for Farm Bill Program benefits,” said Hunt.

St. Paul, MN May 13, 2009 – State Conservationist William Hunt, of the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced today that nearly $1.8 million has been provided to Minnesota for a new initiative to encourage the implementation of conservation practices associated with organic agriculture production. Funding for the initiative is being made available as part of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).

The 2009 National EQIP Organic Initiative is administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. “Promoting Sustainable Food Systems through Organic Agriculture: Past, Present and Future,” authors Christine McCullum-Gomez and Jim Riddle explain the history of the organic movement in the United States, and present research findings which document human and environmental health benefits of organic agriculture, including reduced environmental exposure to pesticides; enhanced biodiversity and soil fertility; and reduced nitrogen pollution, energy use, and greenhouse gas emissions.
